Who needs a Phoenix emissions test

Arizona's program covers two areas. Phoenix and Maricopa County make up Area A, while Tucson and Pima County make up Area B. Phoenix belongs to Area A. According to the myAZcar FAQ, people in greater Phoenix and people who make regular work or school trips into it must have vehicles 1967 and newer pass a test. Registration for the newest 5 years is exempt, and hybrids still test. Your ZIP code determines whether you live outside the area. ARS 49-541 lists Area A in state law. The Arizona emissions test page has the statewide rules.

Phoenix emissions test locations

Sites in Glendale, Mesa, Scottsdale, Chandler and Surprise are listed on the Phoenix area stations page, along with Phoenix itself. Tests happen on a first come, first served basis, so you don't need an appointment. If your gas car is 1996 or newer and under 8,500 lb, you can use an OBD express lane. Mid-week, mid-month, and Saturday afternoons all have shorter lines. You may test no more than 90 days ahead of your registration date. For more cities, visit the emissions test by city page.

Failed the Phoenix emissions test

If you come back within 60 days, the retest costs nothing. If you have two failures and complete a low emissions tune-up, you can submit your waiver application at the Madison or 23rd Ave. waiver center. The waiver costs $15, applies to one registration cycle, and isn't offered with a faulty catalytic converter. The Voluntary Vehicle Repair Program may help pay for repairs on cars from model year 2008 or older. Learn how a waiver works.
