Who needs an Albuquerque emissions test

The City of Albuquerque's Vehicle Pollution Management Division (VPMD) provides testing throughout Albuquerque-Bernalillo County. Any gas vehicle or hybrid registered there must pass the test if it is 35 years old or younger (1992 or later) and weighs under 10,001 lbs. According to the state MVD, people who commute into the county at least 60 days each year must also test. No test is needed for dedicated electric vehicles, diesels, or new cars with their first owner for 4 years. You also need a test when ownership changes. Check the New Mexico emissions test page for more information.

How often testing happens and what the Albuquerque test checks

Plan on a test every two years, the cycle the MVD testing page gives. The city adds that some vehicles get a pass that lasts only 1 year, so the expiry date on your last passing report is the one to follow. Inspectors conduct some of these checks based on the vehicle's age:

  • Check of pollution control equipment
  • Check for visible emissions
  • Pressure check of the gas cap
  • OBD diagnostic test
  • Exhaust test at the tailpipe

Albuquerque emissions test cost and locations

There are more than 120 Air Care stations around the county. Each one must display its test fee on a sign outside. Only VPMD-certified stations may perform tests. The city's Air Care station page has a map you can use to find a station near you. You can take hybrids and plug-in hybrids to any certified station. The emissions test by city hub lists cities in other states.

Albuquerque emissions test failed

If you fail, VPMD gives you one free retest within 90 days of that test. If you have questions, call 505-764-1110, or take the failed report and vehicle to VPMD Headquarters. Before your next visit, read what to do if you fail an emissions test.
