How the test works, and what if the car fails?
The inspector connects a reader to the port under the dashboard during an OBD plug-in test, then reads the data the car computer has stored. Your check engine light must be off, and the self-checks (readiness monitors) must be complete.
A loose cap lets fuel vapor escape, so the gas cap check confirms the cap seals.
The report identifies what did not pass when a car fails. Fix the failed item first, then return for retesting.
