Atlanta Emissions Test
Yes, Atlanta is part of a 13-county metro area. Gasoline cars and light trucks there need an emissions test each year before the registration date. You can pay up to $25 for the test. Georgia's Clean Air Force manages the program.
- Once a year
- Get your test done before your registration date, which is your birthday
- As much as $25
- The station posts the price on its emissions inspection sign
- OBD and visual
- A computer check plus a look at the catalytic converter
- Fulton and DeKalb
- These two are included among the program's 13 counties
Who needs an Atlanta emissions test
Georgia's Clean Air Force includes Fulton and DeKalb among 13 counties where gasoline cars and light-duty trucks (8,500 pounds GVWR or less) from the 2002 to 2023 model years must undergo testing for 2026 registration. The 13 metro Atlanta counties are confirmed by DeKalb's tax office, which also points out City of Atlanta properties in DeKalb; Fulton appears there too.
- You don't need a test for the three newest model years, so 2024 and newer vehicles are exempt for 2026 registration.
- Vehicles that are 25 model years old or older are exempt, including 2001 and older vehicles registered in 2026.
- Diesel vehicles don't need a test.
Our Georgia emissions test page covers rules for the rest of the state. More cities are listed on the emissions test by city page.
The Atlanta test: how often and what it includes
The vehicle owner's birthday sets your registration date, and you must test each year before it. Testing four to six weeks ahead is what the program suggests. A pass is good for 12 months, or for one registration renewal made by the same owner.
There are two parts to the inspection: an OBD check on the car's emissions control history, plus a visual look at the catalytic converter to find tampering or removal. Start by warming up your engine. The tag office receives the results electronically, so you don't need to mail anything.
Atlanta emissions test cost and locations
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Test price | A price of up to $25 appears on the station's emissions inspection sign. |
| Retest | Within 30 calendar days, you can receive one free retest at the same station. |
Your car doesn't have to be tested in its county of registration. Search near you or view every station in a county with the testing locations finder.
If your Atlanta car doesn't pass
Repairs are required, followed by another test. A repair waiver may be possible, as the after you test page notes, if the retest shows gains in each area that failed and, for 2026 registration, your emissions repairs cost $1,176 or more. This applies after a second failure. Possible 30-day registration extensions that cannot be renewed are something a county tag office can explain. Read more in our guides about an emissions waiver and a failed emissions test.
Atlanta emissions test questions
Is an emissions test required every year in Atlanta?
Yes. Every year, your vehicle needs a test before the registration date, unless its age or model year makes it exempt.
Can I get my Atlanta emissions test in another county?
Yes. The county where your vehicle is registered does not have to be where you take the test.
After the test, where do I renew my plates?
Your renewal options include DRIVES e-Services online, a self-serve kiosk where your county participates, and your county tag office.
