Smog Check Coupons
A smog check coupon can only cut the station's own price. In California each station sets what it charges for the inspection, while the $8.25 certificate fee is the same everywhere. Comparing two or three stations, and reading what the coupon price includes, saves more than any single code.
- Set by station
- BAR does not regulate smog check prices
- $8.25
- the certificate fee every station must charge
- 90 days
- how long a passing smog certificate is valid
- $1,450
- the most CAP pays toward repairs after a fail
What a smog check coupon can and cannot lower
The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), the state office that runs Smog Check, does not set inspection prices, so stations compete on them. A coupon or online deal comes off the station's inspection price only. It does not touch the $8.25 certificate fee, and it pays for nothing if the car fails and needs work.
The station must give you an estimate before the inspection and can't start until you approve it. Check that the estimate shows the coupon price plus the certificate fee, so the total at the counter is the one you expected.
How to find a cheaper smog check
- Ask two or three nearby stations for their total price, certificate fee included.
- Read your DMV renewal notice before you shop. If it says "Smog Certification Required at a STAR station", only a STAR station can do the test, so a coupon from any other shop is no use (see STAR station smog check).
- Call ahead. Some stations lack the equipment for every vehicle and will turn yours away.
- A pretest (pre-inspection) can show problems before the official test, but the station has to give you a price for it first.
Certificates and retests
A passing certificate goes to the DMV electronically and stays valid for 90 days, so test close to your renewal or sale date rather than months early. If the car fails, the inspection report says why. Ask the station what a retest costs before you book the first test, so a fail doesn't surprise you twice.
Smog check and emissions test prices outside California
Most other testing states set or cap the fee, which leaves little for a coupon to cut. Texas allows up to $18.50 in the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth areas. Arizona charges $16.15 for the plug-in test. Delaware, Illinois and Wisconsin test for free. Every state's fee is on emissions test cost by state.
Real help after a fail is not a coupon
If the car fails and the repair is the expensive part, California's Consumer Assistance Program pays up to $1,450 toward repairs on a 1996 or newer car, or $1,350 to $2,000 to retire it. Income limits apply to most of it. Details and the other programs are on smog check repair assistance.
Smog check coupon questions
Is the $8.25 certificate fee part of a coupon price?
Not always. The station must charge the certificate fee on every passing check, so ask whether the advertised price includes it before you approve the estimate.
Does a newer car need a smog check at all?
For renewal, a gas or hybrid car in its 8 newest model years skips the smog check and pays a smog abatement fee with the registration instead. When a car is sold, the 4 newest model years skip it and a smog transfer fee is paid. Electric cars never need one.
Do I need a smog check to sell my car in California?
Yes, unless the car is one of the 4 newest model years. Give the buyer a copy of the inspection report; the certificate reaches the DMV electronically.
