Vermont Emissions Test
Through the Vermont emissions inspection, Vermont tests gas, hybrid, and diesel cars across the state. For 2026, model years up to 2026 are covered. Once a year, this test and the safety inspection come due together.
What cars have to be tested?
In 2026, the green band marks which model years Vermont tests. A car more than 16 model years old does not get the OBD check.
Use the model year and fuel to check your car.

How the test works, and what if the car fails?
For an OBD plug-in test, a reader goes into the port under the dashboard so the inspector can read the car computer's saved data. Your car’s self-checks (readiness monitors) must be complete, and its check engine light must be off.
In the visual check, the catalytic converter is the target: the exhaust part that cleans gases before they exit.
This check confirms the gas cap seals, since a loose cap lets fuel vapor escape.
After a fail, the report identifies the problem. Fix the failed item first, then return for the retest.
