Indiana Emissions Test

Through Clean Air Car Check, Indiana checks gas and hybrid cars in 2 counties. Model years 1976 to 2022 are the ones covered in 2026. Odd model years are checked in odd calendar years; even model years go in even calendar years, with 2 years between visits.

Update: A 2026 Indiana law asks EPA to stop testing in Lake and Porter counties by year's end; the test stays required until then.

How the test works, and what if the car fails?

A failed test comes with a report that lists the problem. Fix the problem first, then return for another test.

Indiana offers a waiver if the car still fails after repairs: each car gets one in its lifetime, it covers a single test cycle, and the original repair receipts are required.
