Dallas County emissions inspection: who is covered
Enhanced inspections began in Dallas County on May 1, 2002, and the county has been part of the program since then, according to the TCEQ program overview. Dallas-Fort Worth has a program area made up of nine counties, and Dallas County is one of them:
- Dallas, Denton, and Collin
- Johnson, Kaufman, and Ellis
- Rockwall, Tarrant, and Parker
Rules depend on the county where the car is registered. Cars registered in counties outside the emissions list are not tested. The DPS emissions criteria cover gas vehicles that are 2 through 24 years old. In Fort Worth, drivers register in Tarrant County, which belongs to the same area.
What Dallas drivers do now
Beginning January 1, 2025, the DPS inspection overview reports that non-commercial vehicles no longer require a safety inspection before registration. Vehicles registered in emissions counties must still take emissions tests. You have the inspection done before you renew your registration. The Texas emissions test rules are also there for you to review.
